Image: Portrait of a man with a lute, unknown artist, The Wallace Collection; Photographs from Stephen Barber & Sandi Harris workshop.
I’ve made a podcast for the Wallace Collection focusing on a enigmatic portrait in the Medieval and Renaissance galleries. Entitled ‘Portrait of a young man with a lute’, and attributed an unknown Tuscan painter, this picture is filled with interesting symbols relating to the ambitions of this unknown courtier.
In search of the significance of the instrument in this painting, I visited and interviewed London luthiers Stephen Barber and Sandi Harris. Fortunately, they had an almost identical lute in their workshop which they allowed me to play.
